A Surprising Revelation
As the year draws to a close, Steam recently unveiled its list of the most sought-after games on its platform throughout 2023. The roster brought forth several intriguing surprises, especially regarding the somewhat modest ranking of Baldur’s Gate 3, widely lauded as the best game of the year.
The Unexpected Top Spot
Claiming the top spot is Sons of the Forest, an FPS survival game and the sequel to the renowned series, The Forest. Few could have foreseen this title becoming Steam’s best-selling game of the year, surpassing juggernauts like Hogwarts Legacy and Baldur’s Gate 3. The game’s allure, coupled with an array of mod variations and a supportive companion system, adds to its appeal. Moreover, its relatively affordable price point of around $20 positions Sons of the Forest as a formidable competitor against AAA titles priced at $60-70.
Starfield’s Surprising Position
In an even more surprising turn, Starfield secures the second spot on this list. Just two months ago, the game was a global sensation, renowned for its unique and innovative gameplay. Presently, however, a decline in player numbers and a ‘Mostly Negative’ rating on Steam indicate a shift in sentiments. Despite this, Steam’s rankings place Starfield as the second-best-selling game of the past year.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s Stand
Baldur’s Gate 3, crowned as the best game of 2023, only manages to secure the third spot in this sales ranking. While it maintains a substantial online player base of approximately 110,000, its sales performance doesn’t quite match its industry peers. Following Baldur’s Gate 3 in Steam’s ranking are titles like Apex Legends, Lost Ark, and Hogwarts Legacy, claiming the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively.
